Think big picture
As a section editor you have to think about the whole package, including the story, photo, headline, cutline, breakouts and how it should all be designed to communicate the most clearly and with the most impact.
Look ahead
Use a desk calendar or accordion file to keep track of upcoming events or stories that need follow-up. Meet with reporters to brainstorm ideas and stories.
Start early
When a reporter explains a story idea or if you have an idea, immediately start sketching out ideas of what would need to be done to get the point across effectively. Of course, the point could change as the reporting progresses and editors must be flexible to adjust accordingly, but don’t wait until the story is turned in before thinking of the package.
Think of all the elements
Some elements to consider:
Story
Sidebars
Photos
Main headline kicker
Maps/charts
Breakouts/info boxes
Opportunities for Web
Editorial topics
Illustrations
Breaking out of the mold
Every story can have a breakout box or info box. They accentuate information for readers and help break up the gray. Use them as much as possible. Examples are listed to the right.
See it through to the end
As a section editor, ultimately it’s your responsibility to make sure all these elements come through. You pull it together so you must track each element and make sure everyone is working on it. You are an air traffic controller. Make sure everything lands smoothly.
